Here’s what I love about this cover:
- The palmas reales, the royal palms that to José Martí and to generations of Cubans after him have been the focus of love, longing, and devotion. When I think of childhood and family, I see the palm trees my grandmother painted, and I hear my parents, marking our drive from Miami to New York each year with tears and exclamations as we moved southward and saw palmas reales appearing in the landscape
- The shades of blue; how Beatriz captured the brilliance of clear Caribbean skies and sparkling seas
- The López flag as a symbol for democracy, and against racism and colonialism
- José Martí, with his slight build, big moustache, and an incredible life story that I can’t wait to share
