Visiting the José Martí MAST 6-12 Academy in Hialeah was one of the highlights of my trip to Miami. Normally when I visit schools José Martí is an unknown figure to both students and staff, but at this visit I was greeted with a bust of Martí as soon as I arrived in the office! I had a great time reading to the sixth graders and having a more in-depth conversation about José Martí’s life and its meaning. Best of all, the students showed me around their brand-new library and media center and pointed out their favorite books on the shelves. It makes me so happy to hear kids talking about their reading lives!
