On Thursday, July 20th we all gathered at The Corner Bookstore on 93rd & Madison to celebrate the launch of MARTÍ’S SONG FOR FREEDOM. It was wonderful to see friends, family, and colleagues, and to sing “Guantanamera,” a song whose lyrics draw on Martí’s Versos sencillos. Thank you to my cousin Arabella for playing the guitar, and to everyone who came for singing along!
I got to meet friends of the book’s illustrator, Beatriz Vidal, New Yorkers interested in Cuba, and best of all, kids who had read the book and could tell me their opinions. One child said to me, “My favorite page is the one with the horses. Have you seen that page?”
I have seen that page, and now you can too! Thrilled that Martí is out in the world.
